This evening my husband and I attended the first in the series of Local Flavors dinners. Tonight's dinner was hosted by Maldaner's, which I always like but I was so pleased that they were part of this project. The series of dinners is a project of the I...

This statue of Abe is a relatively new addition to Springfield's large collection of Lincoln statues. Here, you can sit with Abe and maybe have a conversation about whatever is written on the piece of paper he seems to be holding in his hand. This bench...

This whole mess o' signs is located on Jefferson near 5th street. It kind of looks like turning south on 5th will lead you to everything Springfield has to offer (although I don't know who goes to the Executive Mansion).

I noticed recently that many of our Springfield fire hydrants have been repainted. But they weren't painted the traditional fire hydrant red. Instead they are many different colors. I found 3 on MacArthur that are this light green and white.

I don't get this. I mean, I'm not complaining about it--I am a child of the 80s and therefore have the requisite love, appreciation, and respect for Star Wars. (At my high school graduation, the band played the Star Wars theme.) But Star Wars is cool a...

I was playing around taking pictures in my newly-landscaped back yard today when I noticed this tiny little green thing on one of my marigolds. I spent several minutes trying to take his picture and it seemed like he was almost watching me and posing. I...

Because of my own lack of good timing, I've failed to post for 2 days! So, now, even though it's not technically Saturday, June 14, any longer, I'm going to do 2 posts to make up for not having done them for 2 days. This morning I went to the Old Capitol ...

Here is another angle of the Lincoln Family Sculpture downtown (building on the post yesterday). I'm not sure which son is supposed to be far away, but he is probably not in nearly as many tourist photos as his brother.

Here is the Lincoln family standing on the Old Capitol Plaza waiting to take their picture with you. You can't see it in this picture but two of the boys are playing catch.

What a simple concept--sweet, sticky syrup and ice--but it's so good on a hot day. When I was little, sometimes my softball team would get snow cones after a game (but not from any place as fancy as the Ice Deli). It was such a treat. I haven't had an...

Last night my husband and I went to a Springfield Sliders game. Along with grilling (see yesterday's post), baseball says all things summer to me. I love everything about baseball--the weather, the sounds, the strategy, the nuances, and the fact that wh...

In my humble opinion, grilling out is one of the great joys of summer. This was the scene at our house today.

Today I went to Country Market, a little Farmers' Market kind of place at 1301 Wabash. This place is not fancy, but I feel a little happier every time I go here. The staff is usually very friendly and helpful and they have such great stuff, often local...

We've had a lot of stormy weather as of late--thunderstorms, tornado warnings, rain, etc. And every year that stormy weather means the end for some trees. I found this scene in Washington Park yesterday.

I know I've already featured Springfield's carillon here, but this week is the Carillon Festival. The festival runs from June 1 through June 7 and on Friday, June 6, there will be fireworks at sunset. According to the State Journal-Register, all of the ...

This is the Pease's Candy store, a delightful little place, located downtown (note Old State Capitol in background). The Pease's website tells of the business' history, including buying black market sugar in the 1930s. It's a nice story of a local busin...

This is Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop located at 118 N Pasfield (at Pasfield and Jefferson). This particular store claims to have the "first and fastest drive-thru in the nation." I've never actually eaten here or at any Maid-Rite but people seem to like it. ...

Well, in the City Daily Photo world, the first of every month is a theme day. And for June, the theme is My Corner Local Shop. Some cities are dotted with local shops within walking distance of quaint neighborhoods. Springfield is not one of those citi...

It looks like this kid not only has a car, but a playhouse with a DirecTV dish. I wonder if there's a plasma flat screen in there too.

We had a lot of tornado watches and warnings and thunderstorm warnings today. It makes for a slightly more interesting day than normal but it isn't really a big deal since that's just part of life in Central Illinois in the spring and summer. I usually ...
