I know I've already featured Springfield's carillon here, but this week is the Carillon Festival. The festival runs from June 1 through June 7 and on Friday, June 6, there will be fireworks at sunset. According to the State Journal-Register, all of the ...

This is the Pease's Candy store, a delightful little place, located downtown (note Old State Capitol in background). The Pease's website tells of the business' history, including buying black market sugar in the 1930s. It's a nice story of a local busin...

This is Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop located at 118 N Pasfield (at Pasfield and Jefferson). This particular store claims to have the "first and fastest drive-thru in the nation." I've never actually eaten here or at any Maid-Rite but people seem to like it. ...

Well, in the City Daily Photo world, the first of every month is a theme day. And for June, the theme is My Corner Local Shop. Some cities are dotted with local shops within walking distance of quaint neighborhoods. Springfield is not one of those citi...

It looks like this kid not only has a car, but a playhouse with a DirecTV dish. I wonder if there's a plasma flat screen in there too.

We had a lot of tornado watches and warnings and thunderstorm warnings today. It makes for a slightly more interesting day than normal but it isn't really a big deal since that's just part of life in Central Illinois in the spring and summer. I usually ...

This is the Millennium Center Building at Lincoln Land Community College, which houses the Training and Education for Adult Learners (TEAL) program. As the name suggests, the focus of the program is adult education for people who do not have a high schoo...

I saw a few school buses today and it got me thinking about the last few weeks of the school year. Throughout my education there were years I liked more than others but regardless of how the rest of the year went, the end of the year was always so fun. ...

This is a new(ish) fountain at the University of Illinois at Springfield. I was there yesterday for Rochester's high school graduation (some local schools use UIS's facilities for big events like graduations). When I was growing up, this university was ...

This clock is on the corner of South Grand Ave and Henrietta. I've driven on South Grand hundreds or maybe thousands of times in my life and never noticed the clock. It was only when I was on Henrietta that I noticed it. I love it when I "find" somethi...

I took this picture a few weeks ago but just put it on my computer tonight (it was on the camera I use less often and don't download every day). This tree isn't in bloom any more but it's so pretty when it is. Maybe the prettiest things are the most fle...

As I was driving today I was struck by this scene. It reminded me so much of the fun my sisters and I had playing outside when we were little. I imagine some kind of chase was on when suddenly something like dinner interrupted the fun. It also made me ...

For some reason, I've always loved bungalow-style architecture and Springfield is full of bungalows. I particularly love this little bungalow which is always so well kept and inviting.

I see this truck from time to time and it always catches my eye. I think it makes a real statement but I'm not sure what that statement is. Just in case you can't see it clearly, the bumper sticker in the right side of the tailgate reads, "Put meat in t...

I ran across these two faces, on the reverse sides of the same tree, today while on a walk. I was told they are called ents. In case you don't know what an ent is (as I did not), they are "a fictional race of humanoid trees from Tolkein's fantasy world ...

While playing an action-packed game of mini-golf with some friends last night at Knight's Action Park, we ran across this very loud toad at a water feature. He created quite a scene for a bit. (I think this is a toad but maybe it was a frog I'm not su...

The Lincoln Depot, built in 1852, is the spot from which Abraham Lincoln gave his departing speech as he left Springfield to take on the presidency on February 11, 1861. He was such a great orator, and so it's not surprising that in his final speech here...

I went on a field trip to the Illinois State Museum in 3rd grade and I thought it was the most boring thing I'd ever done. What a letdown for a field trip! However, I think the Grammar of Landscape exhibit looks interesting. At some point, I'm going to...

I've heard so many people rave about Del's popcorn (located at 213 S. 6th) but, until today, I had never had it. I'm not a huge popcorn fan but it was really tasty and the store is delightful and smells wonderful.
